THE FLATS – Chesson Hadley and Matt Kuchar had shining moments in last weekend’s RBC Heritage … Kuchar honored at Atlanta Athletic Club … Seven Jackets playing at Valero Texas Open … this and more in this week’s Georgia Tech #ProJackets Report.
Hadley and Kuchar both got out of the gate strong at last weekend’s RBC Heritage in Hilton Head, S.C., each firing 66 in the opening round. Hadley managed to stay in contention until closing with a 72 on Sunday to tie for seventh place at 9-under-par 275, three shots off the lead. It was Hadley’s fifth top-10 finish of the 2017-18 season and his best outing since tying for fifth at the Waste Management Phoenix Open in February. He remains Tech’s top player in the FedEx Cup race at 25th.
Kuchar, who won this event in 2014, closed with a 73 and tied for 23rd at 6-under-par 278, and advanced to 54th in the FedEx Cup rankings. He traveled to Atlanta following the tournament to be honored Monday night by the Atlanta Athletic Club with the Buz McGriff Award, which recognizes excellence in sports.
Ollie Schniederjans and Stewart Cink, who has won twice at Hilton Head, both tied for 42nd place and held their positions in the points list, while Richy Werenski missed the cut.
All five of those players are in the field for this week’s Valero Texas Open in San Antonio, while Cameron Tringale returns to action after two weeks off. Texas native Troy Matteson, a two-time PGA Tour winner, is in the field after getting through Monday qualifying at Briggs Ranch Golf Club in San Antonio, and will make his second Tour start of 2018.

Troy Matteson’s last PGA TOUR win came in a playoff over a pair of promising first-year pros, Rickie Fowler and Jamie Lovemark.
Meanwhile, Larry Mize and Charlie Rymer competed at the Mitsubishi Electric Classic at TPC Sugarloaf in Duluth, Ga., just north of Atlanta. Neither of the former Yellow Jackets fared well, but it did give Rymer, whose full-time job is an analyst on the Golf Channel, a chance to return to the Tech campus. This week, Rymer is live for his Morning Drive program on Golf Channel from Morocco, where the European Tour’s Trophee Hassan II is being held.
