Forrester Falls in Mid-Amateur Final

Sept. 15, 2005

ATLANTA – Kevin Marsh, 32, of Las Vegas, Nev., won the 2005 U.S. Mid-Amateur title, defeating Carlton Forrester, 29, of Birmingham, Ala., 10 and 9, in the championship match Thursday at The Honors Course.

Marsh carried a 10-up lead into the afternoon 18 and each player won a pair of holes on the front nine, with Marsh taking the par-4 27th with a par to close out the match. Marsh played the 27 holes in the equivalent of six under par, with the usual match-play concessions.

Forrester’s finish is the best a Tech player or alumnus has achieved in a USGA national championship since Bill Ploeger won the U.S. Senior Amateur in 1999. As a finalist, he earns an exemption into the 2006 U.S. Amateur and an exemption into the next three U.S. Mid-Amateurs.

Forrester, a 2000 Tech graduate in Management, was a two-time honorable mention All-American and earned all-Atlantic Coast Conference honors in 1999.
