ATLANTA – Former Georgia Tech All-American Carlton Forrester has won his first two matches and advanced to this afternoon’s round of 16 in the United States Mid-Amateur Championship at the Honors Course in Ooltewah, Tenn.
Forrester, an honorable mention All-American in 1999 and 2000 and an all-Atlantic Coast Conference performer in 1999, is the Yellow Jackets’ only representative in the Mid-Amateur Championship, being played outside of Chattanooga this week.
The U.S. Mid-Amateur is open to players 25 years of age and older with a USGA handicap index of 3.4 or lower. A total of 4,130 players entered this year’s event, with 264 qualifying for the stroke play portion of the championship. The top 64 finishers from stroke play qualified for match play, which began Monday.
Forrester defeated Kemp Richardson of Laguna Niguel, Calif., 4 and 3 on Tuesday morning in his second-round match and will face Danny Green of Jackson, Tenn., at 2:25 Tuesday afternoon. He won his first-round match Monday, 4 and 3, over Ryan Fery of Beaverton, Ore.
Forrester, who lives in Birmingham, Ala., made the match play field after tying for 18th place in the stroke-play portion of the championship over the weekend. He carded rounds of 71 at the Honors Course Saturday and 75 at Black Creek Club on Sunday.
