Five Tech Golfers Named to All-ACC Academic Team

June 30, 2014

Greensboro, N.C. – All five starters on Georgia Tech’s golf team have been named to the 2014 All-Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Golf Team announced Monday, while Ollie Schniederjans has also been named the ACC Men’s Golf Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

It is the second time in the last three years that Tech has placed five individuals on the ACC’s All-Academic team, and Schniederjans becomes the second Yellow Jacket to be named Scholar-Athlete of the Year, joining James White, who won it twice in 2011 and 2012

All five members of the Yellow Jackets have made the ACC All-Academic team multiple times. Bo Andrews, a Raleigh, N.C., native who recently graduated with his degree in Management, made the team for the fourth time, while Schniederjans and Anders Albertson, a junior from Woodstock, Ga., made the team for the third time. Seniors Seth Reeves (Duluth, Ga.) and Richard Werenski (South Hadley, Mass., were each honored for the second time.

The Scholar-Athlete of the Year is named after Rod Myers, Duke’s men’s golf coach from 1973-2007. Schniederjans, the 2013-14 ACC Player of the Year, finished as the national runner-up after falling in a playoff at the NCAA Championships, and soon after that ascended to the No. 1 position in the World Amateur Golf rankings. A finalist for the Ben Hogan and Jack Nicklaus Awards in the spring, he won five tournaments this year, a season best all-time by a Yellow Jacket. Ranked No. 4 in the country by Golfstat, his 69.51 stroke average is the best in the league and the second-best in Georgia Tech history.

A native of Powder Springs, Ga, majoring in Management, Schniederjans won three straight events in the spring – the Valspar Invitational, Robert Kepler Invitational, and the ACC Championship – before finishing as the runner-up in both the NCAA Raleigh Regional and NCAA Championship. After the season, he was named to both the GCAA and Golfweek All-America first teams, and recently went 3-1 in his four matches for the United States in the Palmer Cup.

Six golfers who earned All-ACC honors this season secured spots on the 2014 All-ACC Academic Men’s Golf Team: Georgia Tech’s Schniederjans, Seth Reeves, and Anders Albertson, Notre Dame’s Niall Platt, Virginia’s Ben Rusch, and Virginia Tech’s Bryce Chalkley.

Georgia Tech’s Andrews and Virginia Tech’s Chalkley are four-time league academic honorees. Three more – Albertson, Schniederjans, and North Carolina’s Bailey Patrick – earned their third career selection.

Eleven league programs are represented on the academic team, led by Georgia Tech with five honorees. Clemson, Duke, and Virginia Tech had three players recognized, while Maryland, North Carolina, Notre Dame, and Virginia had two players selected.

The ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year award was established in September 2007 to be awarded annually to the top junior or senior student-athlete in their respective sports. Candidates for the award must have maintained a 3.0 grade point average for their career as well as a 3.0 for each of the last two semesters.

To be eligible for consideration for the All-ACC Academic team, a student-athlete, regardless of classification, must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during his academic career.
