Castro, Larsen Pace Golf Team in Las Vegas

ATLANTA –

Roberto Castro shot a two-under-par 70 Friday and Kevin Larsen added a 71 to lead Georgia Tech into third place after 18 holes at the Southern Highlands Collegiate golf tournament in Las Vegas, Nev.

Tech, ranked 17th in the nation, bunched its scores together Friday, getting an even-par 72 from freshman Chesson Hadley and a 73 from sophomore Cameron Trinale in posting a team total of 286, two strokes under par and four back of 13th-ranked UCLA (282). No. 6 Georgia is in second place at 3-under 285.

Castro, a senior from Alpharetta, Ga., opened his round with four birdies and an eagle on the front side before settling back to his 70, which placed him in a tie for seventh individually, three shots behind Martin Piller of Texas A&M (5-under 67). Larsen, a senior from Santa Barbara, Calif., scored a hole-in-one on the par 3 12th hole in his round and is in a group of six players tied for ninth place.

Hadley, a freshman from Raleigh, N.C., who has made the travel squad in each of Tech’s three spring events, closed fast with three birdies in the last six holes and is tied for 15th place. Tringale, a sophomore from Laguna Niguel, Calif., is tied for 21st with his 73.

Piller has a one-shot lead over UCLA’s Kevin Chappell and Georgia’s Chris Kirk and Brendon Todd, who each shot 68 Friday. Billy Horschel of Florida and Lucas Lee of UCLA are tied for fifth place after shooting 69.
