Castro in the Hunt at Isleworth Golf

Oct. 23, 2006

ATLANTA –

Roberto Castro birdied four holes en route to a two-under-par 70 on Monday, moving into contention for the individual title at the Isleworth-UCF Collegiate in Windermere, Fla.

Tech, meanwhile, rallied from a tie for 13th after 18 holes to a tie for fourth at one point on the back nine, but fell back to a tie for 11th after a nine-over-par score of 297. Texas surged into the 36-hole lead with a three-under 285 on Monday and leads Oklahoma State (286 Monday) by one shot. The Yellow Jackets are 16 strokes back.

The Tech senior from Alpharetta, Ga., carded three birdies on his front nine and one on the back, and might have scored even better if not for a double-bogey at the ninth hole. It was his fourth subpar round in eight at the 7,544-yard Isleworth Country Club.

“I played well yesterday but was a little unlucky as I had two three putts,” Castro said after his round. “Today I made some putts and had a couple good breaks. I also hit it really well and had some birdie chances on almost every single hole.”

Coupled with his first-round 74, Castro is in a three-way tie for sixth place at even-par 144, four strokes behind Florida’s Toby Ragland (69-71 – 140). Only five golfers are under par through 36 holes, including Brian Harman of Georgia (141), Dustin Groves of Wake Forest (142), Tyler Leon of Oklahoma State and Kevin Schultz of Texas (both at 143).

Taylor Hall and David Dragoo each shot 75 for Tech Monday, while Cameron Tringale followed his first-round 70 with a 77 and fell back to a tie for 22nd individually.

Tech tees off at 8:04 a.m. in Tuesday’s final round. Live scoring is available at www.golfstatresults.com.
