Feb. 25, 2007

ATLANTA –

Roberto Castro shot a four-under-par 68 to pace Georgia Tech Sunday, while Cameron Tringale shot 71 to help the Yellow Jackets to a tie for eighth place after the first round of the Puerto Rico Classic in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico.

Tech, the nation’s 19th-ranked team, posted a one-under-par 287 team score and is tied for eighth with Kent State, 14 shots behind East Tennessee State, which was boosted by a pair of seven-under-par 65s from Rhys Davies and Cian McNamara.

The 16th-ranked Buccaneers, who shot 15-under 273 as a team, are six strokes ahead of No. 5 Georgia (279), eight ahead of No. 2 Stanford (281) and nine ahead of No. 4 Oklahoma State (282). Clemson (283) is another stroke back in fifth place, while Duke and Alabama are tied for sixth at four-under-284.

Castro’s 68, which included six birdies and a pair of bogeys, put him in a tie for third place with Oklahoma State’s Jonathan Moore, Stanford’s Matthew Savage and Georgia’s Brendon Todd. The senior from Alpharetta, Ga., has a streak of four straight sub-70 rounds.

Tringale, a sophomore from Laguna Niguel, Calif., is tied for 24th place, and freshman Chesson Hadley is tied for 44th after carding a one-over-par 73. Senior Kevin Larsen posted Tech’s other counting score with a 75, while freshman Daniel Bowden had an 81.

Round two of the 54-hole tournament is scheduled for Monday, and the final round Tuesday.
