ATLANTA – Roberto Castro shot a two-over-par 72 Tuesday to lead Georgia Tech, but the Yellow Jackets struggled on the back nine at the Golden Horseshoe Golf Club and fell into a tie for 12th place after 36 holes of the PING/Golfweek Preview Invitational in Williamsburg, Va.
None of the 15 teams, 14 of which are ranked among the nation’s top 25, were able to break par on the par-70, 6.809-yard North Course Tuesday. Defending national champion Oklahoma State and UNLV fared best with even-par scores of 280, and the Cowboys are tied for the lead with Florida at two-over-par 562. The Rebels and Texas A&M are tied for third one shot back. Georgia is in fifth place, six shots off the lead.
Tech, which played the front nine at level par, went 17-over on the back and finished the day tied with Brigham Young at 25-over-par for the tournament, 23 shots off the lead. The final round is Wednesday, and live scoring is available on www.golfstatresults.com.
Castro, a senior from Alpharetta, Ga., birdied four holes on the front side, but bogeyed five coming in for his 72. he is tied for 29th place individually at four-over 144 for 36 holes, eight shots behind the Cowboys’ Pablo Martin, who shot 69 Tuesday and has a tournament total of 136, four under par.
A similar fate befell the rest of Tech’s golfers, with Cameron Tringale posting a 74, Taylor Hall a 75 and Kevin Larsen a 76, while Adam Cohan did not count for the Jackets after a 77.
