Women’s Basketball Opens NCAA Tournament Friday

STANFORD, Calif. – Making its second consecutive postseason appearance, Georgia Tech women’s basketball opens the 2022 NCAA Tournament on Friday at 7:30 p.m. EST (4:30 p.m. PST) on ESPNU against Kansas in Maples Pavilion, hosted by Stanford. The Yellow Jackets earned the No. 9 seed in the tournament, while the Jayhawks are seeded No. 8.

Friday’s meeting will mark the first between Georgia Tech and Kansas. The winner will advance to second round action on Sunday, facing the winner of No. 1-seeded Stanford vs. No. 16-seeded Montana State.

GEORGIA TECH UPDATE: Georgia Tech enters the NCAA Tournament off a quarterfinal run in the ACC Tournament. The Yellow Jackets opened the ACC Tournament with a victory over Wake Forest before meeting Notre Dame in the quarterfinals. Tech capped the regular season with Lorela Cubaj earning ACC Defensive Player of the Year for the second consecutive year. She also picked up all-ACC first team honors, while Lotta-Maj Lahtinen collected all-ACC honorable mention.

GEORGIA TECH NCAA TOURNAMENT HISTORY: Georgia Tech’s 2022 NCAA Tournament berth marks the 11th appearance by the Yellow Jackets in the Big Dance. Tech made its first appearance in 1993, but would not return again until 2003. From 2007-12, the Jackets made six consecutive NCAA Tournaments, highlighted by the program’s first-ever run to the NCAA Sweet 16 in 2012.

Last season, Georgia Tech made a run to the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 for just the second time in program history. The Jackets have won five first round games dating back to 2007.

KANSAS UPDATE: Kansas earned the No. 8 seed in the tournament and will make its first appearance in the Big Dance since 2013. Led by Big 12 Coach of the Year, Brandon Schneider, Kansas finished the Big 12 regular season in fifth place. Three Jayhawks collected All-Big 12 honors with Taiyanna Jackson also earning a spot on the All-Big 12 Defensive Team. Kansas is making its 14th appearance in the NCAA Tournament.
