GREENSBORO, N.C. – Senior Aaliyah Whiteside of the Georgia Tech women’s basketball team was named the ACC Player of the Week for the week of Nov. 16, the Atlantic Coast Conference announced Monday.
This is the second ACC weekly honor of Whiteside’s career. She was named the ACC Rookie of the Week for the week of Dec. 24, 2012. It is the first time that a Yellow Jacket has garnered the ACC Player of the Week award since Tyaunna Marshall received the accolade for the week of Feb. 10, 2014.
Whiteside proved herself as a senior leader this weekend, leading the Yellow Jackets in scoring in two wins. Whiteside scored at least 20 points in both games against Loyola Chicago and St. Francis Brooklyn, and averaged 21.5 points over the opening weekend. Whiteside accounted for 25 percent of Georgia Tech’s points over two games. She shot 50 percent from the field and averaged 6.0 rebounds per game.
In the season opening win against Loyola Chicago, Whiteside scored a team-high 22 points and led the team in rebounding with eight boards. Her 22 points against the Ramblers were the second most in the ACC on opening night. In Tech’s 89-51 victory against St. Francis Brooklyn, Whiteside scored 21 points, had a team-high three steals and pulled down four rebounds.
Whiteside is just 21 points away from becoming the 29th Yellow Jacket to score 1,000 career points. The Memphis, Tenn., native has 979 career points.
The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Wednesday, hosting Southeastern Louisiana at 7 p.m. at McCamish Pavilion. The Jackets will be collecting non-perishable food items prior to the game. Collection will begin when doors open at 6pm and continue until halftime. Donations can be dropped off at the marketing table on the main concourse behind section 102. Any donation of two or more non-perishable food items will receive a voucher to redeem a post-game photo on the court.
