Cameron Tringale and Matt Wieters were named Georgia Tech Student-Athletes of the Week for Monday, June 5, 2006.
Tringale, a freshman from Laguna Beach, Calif., shot a two-over-par 74 and nevertheless finished among the top 10 individuals at the NCAA Men’s Division I Golf Championship at Crosswater Golf Club. He finished the championship with a three-under-par total of 285 (73-70-68-74), in a tie for eighth place, nine shots off the pace of Oklahoma State’s Jonathan Moore, a red-shirt freshman who earned medalist honors and led the Cowboys to the team title.
Wieters, a sophomore from Goose Creek, SC, led the baseball team to the NCAA Atlanta Regional championship with a win over Stetson and two wins over Vanderbilt. Named the Most Outstanding Player of the Regional, Wieters reached base safely in 14 of 15 plate appearances in the regional, including each of his last 11 plate appearances, with seven hits and six walks. In the championship game against Vanderbilt, Wieters had two hits, both of them home runs, and drove in three RBI. He also finished the game on the mound, recording the final two outs of the game, including a strikeout.
