Thompson, Anderson Named Academic All-District

May 28, 2004

Georgia Tech golf all-America Nick Thompson and tennis standout Kelly Anderson have been named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District III At-Large teams, announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America.

Thompson, a junior from Coral Springs, Fla., was tabbed to the Men’s At-Large second-team, while Anderson, a sophomore from Pietermartburg, South Africa, made the Women’s At-Large second-team.

A Management major, Thompson is the top individual for Tech’s nationally-ranked golf team, which begins play in the NCAA Championships at Hot Springs, Va., next week. He is a two-time all-Atlantic Coast Conference selection, he leads the Jackets with a 71.19 stroke average.

Anderson, also majoring in Management, was named to the all-ACC team this year after winning the conference’s Rookie of the Year award as a freshman. She led Tech with 23 singles victories while helping the Jackets to their fifth straight NCAA berth.

The At-Large Team consists of student-athletes in all sports other than football, basketball, volleyball, baseball, softball and soccer and track, while District III includes all Division I schools in Georgia, Florida, North and South Carolina and Virginia. To be eligible, a student-athlete must maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.2 or higher.

Thompson and Anderson bring to seven the number of Tech student-athletes who have earned CoSIDA Academic All-District honors in 2003-04. Honored earlier this year were Kele Eveland (volleyball), Hal Higgins (football), Marvin Lewis (basketball), Steven Blackwood (baseball) and Erin Voeltz (softball). The men’s and women’s track teams will be announced next week.
