Results and Final Round Tee Times | Directions to Capital City Club Crabapple
Alpharetta, Ga. – Bo Andrews carded his second straight 70 Monday, and Anders Albertson matched him in leading 4th-ranked Georgia Tech to a second-round score of 282 (+2), bringing the Yellow Jackets within three shots of the lead of the PING/Golfweek Preview Invitational at the Capital City Club Crabapple.
With the 7,248-yard, par-70 Crabapple course playing tough again Monday, Tech continued to play solid golf, getting 1-over-par-71s from Ollie Schniederjans and Seth Reeves to lift itself closer to the lead. Freshman Michael Hines didn’t count for Tech, but played a creditable round of 72.
Fifth-ranked UCLA slid backward on the difficult closing stretch of holes 14 through 18, but took over the 36-hole lead after shooting 4-over 284 Monday. The Bruins have a two-round total of 566 (+6), one stroke clear of No. 15 UNLV, the first-round leader who shot 6-over 286 Monday. The Yellow Jackets remained in a tie for third place at 569 (+9) with California, while Washington and New Mexico share fifth place at 571 (+11).
“Our guys got off to a better start today and that helped,” said Tech coach Bruce Heppler. “They have done a nice job of competing all the way through the round. We had five solid scores today, which is very important to stay in the hunt. We have a great opportunity to compete tomorrow.”
Defending national champion Texas (283 Monday) is in seventh place at 573 (+13), followed by Texas A&M (+14) and San Diego State (+15). Alabama (+18), the NCAA runner-up in 2012, is in 10th place, followed by Georgia (+19), Arkansas and Kent State (both at +20), Florida State (+22) and Chattanooga (+36).
Fourteen of the 15 teams in the Preview are listed among the nation’s top 25 teams in pre-season rankings by Golfweek magazine, co-sponsor of the Preview, which is held every year at the host venue for the NCAA Division I Championship (May 28-June 3).
San Diego State’s Tom Berry maintained his lead in the medal race, firing a 1-under 69 Monday for a 4-unver tournament total of 136. He is two strokes ahead of New Mexico’s Gavin Green and three ahead of Texas A&M’s Cameron Peck, who each posted the day’s low score of 67. After 36 holes, only seven individuals stand at par or better.
Andrews, a junior from Raleigh, N.C., had four birdies on his card Monday, and is in a tie for fifth place individually at even-par 140. Albertson, with 16 pars, one birdie and one bogey Monday, is tied for eighth at 141. Schniederjans and Reeves are tied for 29th at 144.
Admission is free for the Preview. Tee times begin at 8:30 a.m. for Tuesday’s final round, with Tech groups beginning at 10:10 a.m. Live scoring will be available at www.golfstatresults.com.
