Tech Golfers Sixth after 18 Holes at Waikoloa Intercollegiate

Feb. 12, 2003

WAIKOLOA, HI – Led by an even-par score of 70 by sophomore Chan Wongluekiet, the Georgia Tech golf team is one of three teams tied for sixth place at 8-over-par 288 following the first round of play at the Taylor Made/Waikoloa Intercollegiate in Waikoloa, Hawai’i. The 54-hole tournament is being played at both the par-72, 7,074-yard Kings and par-70, 6,566-yard Beach Courses.

The Yellow Jackets opened play in the event by playing the Beach Course and finished with the opening round score of 288. That total puts Tech 12 shots off the pace of team leader TCU, which fired a team round of 4-under-par 276 on the first day of play, also on the Beach Course layout.

Wongluekiet led the Tech individuals in the field, as he is one of nine players tied for 12th place at even-par, 31-39-70 following the first round of play. He is four shots off the pace of individual leader Ryan Baca of Baylor, who carded a 6-under-par, 34-32-66 in the opening round at the King’s Course.

Rookie Thomas Jordan is the next Yellow Jacket in the field, as he is part of an eight-way tie for 21st place, following a 1-over-par score of 34-37-71 on Wednesday. Senior Troy Matteson is the third Tech individual in the field, as he is part of an 18-way logjam in 46th place at 3-over-par, 37-36-73. Sophomore Nicholas Thompson is the fourth Jacket individual in the field and his opening-round score of 4-over-par, 39-35-74, places him among 13 players tied for 62nd place. Rounding out the Yellow Jacket contingent is senior Adam Cranford, who is in 130th place after an opening round score of 43-41-84.

The Taylor Made/Waikoloa Intercollegiate will continue on Thursday with the second round of play and will conclude on Friday with the final round of competition.
