Roberto Castro shot a one-under-par 71 Saturday, Cameron Tringale matched par at 72, and Georgia Tech remains within four shots of the lead after 36 holes at the Southern Highlands Collegiate in Las Vegas, Nev.
The fourth-ranked Yellow Jackets shot eight-over 296 Saturday, one shot better than Friday on a day when only one team broke par on the 7,510-yard, par 72 Southern Highlands Golf Club.
But Tech slipped two spots in the standings to fifth place, trailing top-ranked Georgia and host UNLV, who remained tied for the lead after posting scores of 294. The Bulldogs and Rebels are tied at 13-over-par 589, one shot ahead of UCLA (591), who jumped from seventh place with a one-under-par score of 287. Oklahoma State shot 293 Saturday and is in fourth at 592, followed by Tech at 593.
Castro, a junior from Alpharetta, Ga., was one of 10 individuals to break par Saturday, and his 71 put him in ninth place individually at three-over-par 147. The All-American, who had four birdies Saturday, is seven shots off the pace of Georgia’s Chris Kirk (four-under-par 140), whose 67 Saturday was the best score of the day.
UCLA’s Daniel Im (73 Saturday) is the only other player under par through 36 holes at two-under 142.
Tech’s Mike Barbosa (five-over 149) is tied for 13th place after carding a 76 Saturday. Tringale, whose round included three birdies and three bogeys, and Kevin Larsen (78 Saturday) are tied for 21st place. Taylor Hall (77 Saturday) is tied for 39th at 153.
