Tech Golfer Aidan Kramer Wins Yamaha Atlanta Open

Final leaderboard

THE FLATS – Georgia Tech freshman golfer Aidan Kramer outlasted a 156-player field of top Georgia PGA professionals and amateur golfers over 36 holes and won a three-man playoff Tuesday to capture the title at the 104th playing of the Yamaha Atlanta Open at Pinetree Country Club in Kennesaw.

Kramer, representing the Golf Club of Georgia, scored a birdie on the par-5 ninth hole, the first hole of the playoff, to defeat professionals Chad Thomas of West Pines Golf Club and Greg Edwards of East Lake Golf Club, both of whom parred the hole.

The Oviedo, Fla., native shot a pair of 69s Monday and Tuesday, rallying with a 4-under-par back nine in Tuesday’s round to finish 36 holes at 6-under-par 138 and force the playoff.

“It’s so cool,” Kramer said. “I was looking over the trophy and to see some of the names on there — Bobby Jones, Davis Love Jr. — it just means so much to get my name on that trophy.”

Kramer came to Tech as the No. 23-ranked player in the class of 2020 according to the Golfweek/Sagarin boys ratings and posted a pair of top-10 finishes in fall collegiate amateur events, including a tie for ninth at the Forest Hills GCAA Amateur in Augusta, Ga., the week before the Masters (212, -4), and a tie for ninth at the Carolina Trace GCAA Amateur (218, +2). He has not played a collegiate round for the Yellow Jackets this spring.
