Tech Golf Records Dual-Match Win Over BYU To Open 2002-03 Season

Sept. 21, 2002

Alpharetta, Ga. – The Georgia Tech golf team got its 2002-03 campaign off to a strong start by claiming a 5.5-1.5 dual-match victory over BYU at the Golf Club of Georgia in Alpharetta, Ga.

The Yellow Jackets took command of the match early, before holding off a late Cougar charge to claim the victory. Tech jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead on the strength of the play of sophomore Chan Wongluekiet and freshman Thomas Jordan. Wongluekiet wasted little time in disposing of BYU’s Clark Rustand, claiming a 6 and 5 win to put the Jackets up 1-0. Jordan then followed with a 5 and 3 win over Clay Bingham, to up the advantage to 2-0.

The Cougars then closed the margin to 2-1, as Ron Harvey defeated Yellow Jacket freshman Michael Barbosa by a 4 and 3 count. Tech was then able to up its advantage to 3-1, as sophomore Wren Fowler made his collegiate debut with a 2 up victory over Devin Heid.

The final three matches of the day came down to the final three holes, with Tech picking up two victories to seal the overall match. The Jackets clinched the match when senior Troy Matteson recorded a birdie on the 16th hole to claim a 3 and 2 win over Daniel Summerhays. Sophomore Nicholas Thompson was the final winner of the day for the Yellow Jackets, as he defeated BYU’s Jared Overton by a 2 and 1 score.

In the day’s final match, Tech senior Adam Cranford birdied the 18th hole to halve his match with Greg Machtaler.
