THE FLATS – Junior CF Ryan Peurifoy’s two-run single in the eighth inning gave the Gold Team the margin it needed as Gold evened the 2016 #WGSERIES with a 4-3 victory over the White Team on Sunday at Russ Chandler Stadium.
Peurifoy’s two-run knock made it 4-1, and the Gold Team held off a two-run rally by the White Team in the bottom of the ninth. The Gold squad bounced back to even the best-of-three intra-squad series at 1-1 after Team White won 15-0 on Friday. The third and final game of the Yellow Jackets’ annual end-of-fall series is set for Tuesday at 4 p.m.
The game was a pitchers’ duel over the first six innings as the Gold Team’s junior RHP Brandon Gold (3.0 IP, one hit, three strikeouts) and freshman RHP Keyton Gibson (3.0 IP, no hits) silenced the White, while senior RHP Cole Pitts (3.0 IP, one hit, four strikeouts) and freshman RHP Bobby Gauvreau (3.0 IP, two hits) did the same to Gold.
The Gold Team seized their first lead of the series thanks to a two-out RBI single from rookie Brant Stallings in the seventh. White matched in the home half with a sac fly from freshman Tristin English after senior Matt Gonzalez opened the frame with a triple to right.
Gold regained the lead when Brandon Gold laced an RBI double to the right-field gap and made it 4-1 thanks to Peurifoy’s two-run single.
The White Team tried to rally in the bottom of the ninth, loading the bases with no outs. But senior RHP Joe Wiseman rolled three straight ground balls to end the threat and earn the save.
Freshman RHP Micah Carpenter pitched the seventh and the eighth for the Gold Team and earned the win (1-0).
Stallings, along with sophomores Kel Johnson and Trevor Craport each had two of the 10 hits for the Gold Team. Gonzalez accounted for two of the White Team’s four hits.
