No. 1 Jackets Golf Capture Fourth Title, Win US Collegiates

ATLANTA (April 9) – Georgia Tech posted a 13-under par score of 275 on Sunday afternoon to earn a 14-stroke victory at the Compaq U.S. Collegiate Championships at the Eldorado Golf Club in Los Cabos, Mexico.

Tech, ranked first in the nation, posted the top team score of the day, for the second straight day, expanding a one-shot lead into a commanding 14-stroke victory. The tournament title was the fourth for the Jackets this season, who posted an aggregate team score of 838 (26-under) for the weekend.

Clemson, ranked second nationally, finished a distant second with a total of 852 (12-under), while fifth-ranked Oklahoma State finished third at 855 (9-under).

Each of the five Tech golfers finished in the top 14 in the individual competition, led by sophomore Troy Matteson, whose score of 70 on Sunday left him tied for fifth at seven-under par, 207. Senior Matt Kuchar posted Tech’s best round on Sunday, five-under par 67, while finishing in a tie for seventh at five-under par 211.

Senior Carlton Forrester and junior Bryce Molder posted scores of 68 and 70 respectively on Sunday, while finishing the tournament tied for 10th, with a score of 212 (4-under).

Sophomore Matt Weibring posted a 73 on Sunday, finishing tied for 14th in the tournament at 215 (1-under).

Edward Loar of Oklahoma State captured the individual title by a stroke, after using a three-under par score of 69 on Sunday to post a score of 203 (13-under). Sunday’s play was highlighted by the third course record to be set in as many days, as Northwestern senior Jess Daley shot a 10-under score of 62 on the 7,028 yard-par 72 layout, to finish third.

Georgia Tech will return to action on April 21, as the Jackets will compete in the ACC Championships to be held at the Old State North Club in Uwharrie Point, N.C.
