Matteson Shoots 64 to Share Individual Lead

ATLANTA – Troy Matteson matched his career low round with an 8-under-par 64 Saturday, and Georgia Tech shot a 4-under-par 284 to improve four positions in the team standings after two rounds of the Carpet Capital Collegiate in Rocky Face, Ga.

Tech began the day in 17th place out of 18 teams, but Matteson, the defending NCAA champion, led the charge with six birdies on his back nine for a 30. He is tied for the individual lead with Bill Haas of Wake Forest (70) at 8-under-par 136. Matteson matched rounds of 64 he shot at the Jerry Pate Intercollegiate and the U.S. Intercollegiate, both in 2000.

Sophomore Nicholas Thompson carded a 71 as Tech finished the day in 13th place at 588. Adam Cranford shot a 73 and Wren Fowler a 76 for the Yellow Jackets.

Florida maintained its lead by matching Tech’s 284 for a two-round total of 562, seven shots ahead of Clemson, which had a team score of 282 on the day. UNLV is in third at 572, and Augusta State shot the best team score of the day (281) to move into fourth place at 575. Southern California is in fifth place (579) and Georgia is sixth (580).

Camilo Villegas of Florida (71) and Oliver Wilson of Augusta State (67) are two shots back of Matteson and Haas in the medal race.

The tournament, being played at The Farm (6,906 yards, par 72), will conclude with the final 18 holes Sunday. Live scoring can be found at www.golfstat.com.
