THE FLATS – Georgia Tech golf alumnus Matt Kuchar will compete in his second Ryder Cup matches for the United States in the biennial competition that begins Friday at Medinah Country Club outside Chicago, Ill.
The 2000 graduate of the Institute in Management earned his spot on the team this year by finishing seventh in the qualifying points list (the top 10 earned automatic spots on the team). Georgia Tech has had an alumnus on the U.S. Ryder Cup team each of the last seven times the matches have been contested.
The United States team, captained by Davis Love III, also includes Keegan Bradley, Jason Dufner, Jim Furyk, Dustin Johnson, Zach Johnson, Phil Mickelson, Brandt Snedeker, Webb Simpson, Steve Stricker, Bubba Watson and Tiger Woods.
Kuchar has earned nearly $4 million in 22 events on the PGA Tour this year, finishing 18th in FedEx Cup points and advancing all the way to the Tour Championship in the FedEx Cup playoffs. He has accumulated nearly $21 million in earnings in his career.
He posted an individual match record of 1-1-2 in the 2010 Ryder Cup, in which the European team defeated the USA, 14 1/2 to 13 1/2. Kuchar also has played in the Presidents Cup once.
Friday’s matches will be televised live on ESPN from 8 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. NBC will air coverage Saturday (9 a.m. – 7 p.m.) and Sunday (12 noon – 6 p.m.).
