THE FLATS – Nicholas Thompson earned his sixth top-25 finish of the year last weekend when he shot 9-under-par 271 to tie for 15th place at the Travelers Championship in Cromwell, Conn.
He was one of four top-15 finishers among Georgia Tech alumni on the weekend. Matt Weibring tied for 14th at the Air Capital Classic on the Web.com Tour with a 7-under-par score of 273. Meanwhile, Bo Andrews tied for ninth (13-under-par 275) and Anders Albertson tied for 14th (12-under-par 276) at the eGolf Tour’s Mimosa Hills Open.
Bryce Molder tied for 64th at the Travelers Championship and passed $9 million in career earnings on the PGA Tour.
Only three former Yellow Jackets are in the field for this week’s Greenbrier Classic, as Molder and Thompson join Cameron Tringale coming off an idle week. Roberto Castro is on the list of alternates. Weibring and Richard Werenski are set to play in the Nova Scotia Open on the Web.com Tour, while Shun Yat Hak, who has missed the cut in both MacKenzie Tour (PGA Tour Canada) events he has played, is in the field for the Siga Dakota Dunes Open in Saskatchewan.
Former Tech players have accumulated more than $5.8 million in PGA Tour earnings this season, and six Yellow Jackets are currently among the top 125 in FedEx Cup points, which gets them into the first event in the playoffs. Matt Kuchar leads the group at No. 27, followed by Cameron Tringale (42), Chesson Hadley (66), Bryce Molder (102), Nicholas Thompson (107) and Cink (125).
Open Championship update
Five Tech alumni – Stewart Cink, David Duval, Matt Kuchar, Ollie Schniederjans and Cameron Tringale – are exempt into the 2015 Open Chmpionship at St. Andrews, Scotland. Cink and Duval remain exempt as former champions (Duval in 2001, Cink in 2009). Kuchar qualifies via his position among the top 50 players in the Official World Golf Ranking, having advanced to the the 2014 Tour Championship and having played in the 2014 Ryder Cup. Tringale qualified after advancing to last year’s Tour Championship. Schniederjans, Tech’s two-time All-American and ACC Player of the Year who graduated in May, has an exemption from having won the Mark H McCormack Medal last year. Schniederjans will travel overseas to play in the Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open the week before. After the Open Championship, he will begin playing as a professional.
Other Tech alumni can qualify at one of two upcoming PGA Tour events. Four spots are available at this week’s Greenbrier Classic to the leading four players, not otherwise exempt, who finish in the top 12 and ties. One additional spot is offered to the leading player (also not otherwise exempt) who finishes in the top five and ties at the John Deere Classic.
