@GT_GOLF Fall Schedule Announced

Aug. 26, 2016

THE FLATS – Georgia Tech’s golf team will make two trips to the West Coast this fall as well as hosting the annual Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate and the Carpet Capital Collegiate in a four-event fall schedule announced Friday by head coach Bruce Heppler.

The two traditional in-state events that Tech plays in the fall, as well as the first-time events across the country – the Maui Jim Invitational in Arizona and the Cypress Point Classic in California – provide the Yellow Jackets with strong competition to test a roster which includes all seven players returning from last year’s NCAA regional team plus a four-man freshman class that is one of the best in the nation. All four events include teams which advanced to the final eight, match-play portion of the NCAA Championship last spring.

“There are a lot of good teams out there across the country,” said Heppler. “Along with our traditional events here in Georgia, we found two events that will really challenge us with excellent golf courses and strong fields.”

The Yellow Jackets begin six rounds of qualifying at East Lake Golf Club this weekend.

Tech hosts the 11th annual Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate, Oct. 21-23, at the Golf Club of Georgia in Alpharetta, Ga. Formerly known as the United States Collegiate Championship, the 17-team field is as strong as ever with 12 of the participants ranked in last spring’s final Golfstat top 25. Among those teams are top-ranked Texas, the 2016 NCAA Championship runner-up, as well as Southern California (3), LSU (8) and Oklahoma (14), each of whom advanced to the NCAA Match Play Championship last spring. The field also has seven other teams who made the NCAA Championship stroke-play field – Auburn (15), Oklahoma State (5), Stanford (13), Texas A&M (24), TCU, Virginia (22) and Wake Forest (19). The Yellow Jackets have won the Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate twice (2010, 2012).

“We discussed the future of the event there,” said Heppler, “and we decided it needed to be named after the venue or Georgia Tech, so we decided to create a name that acknowledges where the tournament is played and who is hosting it. We’re excited about the event going forward, and it will continue to host a high-quality field as evidenced by the teams we have this year.”

The Yellow Jackets begin the fall for the 17th consecutive year in the Carpet Capital Collegiate, Sept. 9-11 at The Farm Golf Club in Rocky Face, Ga., an event Tech has won seven times, as recently as 2013. The 14-team field for this year’s event includes LSU and South Carolina, who advanced to match play at the NCAA Championship last spring, as well as NCAA Championship entrants Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, Florida and Virginia. Tech players have won medalist honors each of the last three years, with Jacob Joiner capturing the title last fall.

Heppler’s team will make its first-ever appearances in two events on the West Coast, the Maui Jim Invitational on Sept. 23-25 in Scottsdale, Ariz., and the Cypress Point Classic, a match-play event Oct. 31-Nov. 1 on the famed Monterrey Peninsula in California.

The Maui Jim Invitational is hosted by Georgia State and is being played at Mirabel Country Club. The 16-team field again includes LSU and South Carolina as well as top programs California and Houston.

Stanford hosts a heavyweight field for the Cypress Point Classic, which is an eight-team match-play tournament at Cypress Point Golf Club, one of the courses played during the PGA Tour’s AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. Tech will join Alabama, California, Georgia, Southern California, UCLA and Wake Forest, as well as the host Cardinal, in the two-day, 54-hole event that concludes the Jackets’ fall slate. The teams will be pre-seeded No. 1 through 8 in order by average ranking between Golfstat and Golfweek rankings seven days prior to event. The No. 1 seed will play the No. 8 seed, No. 2 vs. No. 7, etc., in first round of bracketed play. Winners will go forward in the bracket, while losers will move to consolation bracket. Each team will be guaranteed three matches under each format outlined. Each team will compete with six players, and all players will have caddies.

“The Maui Jim event caught our attention once the ACC/SEC Challenge event went away,” said Heppler. “It’s a three-day event that fit our calendar, and it’s on a really good golf course. We get a chance to play on one of the iconic golf courses in Cypress Point, and it’s a match-play event which will help us prepare for the NCAA. It’s a very strong field there and a great way to end the fall.”
