Rio Grande, Puerto Rico – James White and Kyle Scott each shot 3-under-par 69s Monday as Georgia Tech golfers shot 4-under-par 284, but Alabama pulled into a tie with the fifth-ranked Yellow Jackets after 36 holes at the Puerto Rico Classic golf tournament.
The Yellow Jackets shot the day’s second-best score, but the fourth-ranked Crimson Tide posted a 7-under 281 to catch up with Tech. With the final round set for an 8 a.m. shotgun start Tuesday, the Jackets and the Tide, tied at 14-under-par 562, are six stroke ahead of No. 2 Oklahoma State, which shot 3-under-par 285 Monday and has a 36-hole total of 8-under 568.
Tech, which had a three-stroke lead after the first round, is bidding to win its second tournament this year. The Jackets won the United States Collegiate Championship in the fall.
“We got off to a great start today in some very difficult conditions,” said head coach Bruce Heppler. “We stalled a little bit in the middle of the round and we didn’t finish the way we would have liked, but we still had the second low team score of the day. Our guys should feel good about their ability to shoot some really low scores. We’re in the final group of the day for the sixth straight tournament, so we have another chance to win.”
Virginia Tech is in fourth place at 3-under 573, and Oklahoma holds fifth place at even-par 576. No. 5 Texas, No. 13 Georgia, Clemson, NC State and East Tennessee State round out the top 10 in the 15-team field at the 6,902-yard Rio Mar Resort River Course.
White, a junior from Acworth, Ga., had a bogey-free round Monday in which he birdied three of his first four holes and parred out to finish 36 holes at 6-under-par 138, tied for second place with Oklahoma State’s Morgan Hoffman. He will start the final round one shot behind Alabama All-American Bud Cauley, who was a shot better than White Monday with a 68 and has a two-round total of 137.
Scott, who opened with a 70 Sunday, birdied four of his first five holes and had five on his card, completing two rounds at 5-under 139. He is alone in fourth place individually.
John-Tyler Griffin posted an even-par 72 Monday to go with his opening 70, and is tied for 10th at 2-under 142. Richard Werenski and Paul Haley added 74s for the Jackets. Werenski is tied with two others for 12th place at 1-under 143.
