ATLANTA (April 21) – Georgia Tech opened defense of its Atlantic Coast Conference men’s golf championship by posting a 1-under-par 287 and stands in second place, three shots behind NC State, following the first round of the 2000 ACC Golf Championship Friday afternoon at Badin Lake, N.C.

The Yellow Jackets, ranked No. 1 in both the Mastercard and Golfweek magazine collegiate rankings, were led by senior Matt Kuchar (Lake Mary, Fla.), who carded a 1-under-par 71 and is tied for third place with four others.

Junior Bryce Molder (Conway, Ark.), freshman Troy Matteson (Austin, Texas) and sophomore Matt Weibring (Plano, Texas) each posted an even-par 72 for the Jackets and are tied for eighth place. Senior Carlton Forrester (Gainesville, Ga.) shot 77 and did not count for Tech Friday.

Only eight players broke par as winds kept scores up at the 7,102-yard Old North State Club. Carl Patterson led the NC State charge with a 70 and is tied for the individual lead with John Engler of Clemson. Chris Mundorf and David Sanchez of the Wolfpack are in the group at 71 with Kuchar.
