ATLANTA – Six of the top eight seeds claimed their opening round matches at the 2004 Men’s Hooters Collegiate Match Play Championship. Play was delayed by 40 minutes in the morning due to overnight rains. The second round was suspended due to darkness and will resume at 8 a.m. on Monday.
The tournament’s top two seeds – Georgia Tech and Oklahoma State – won their first round matches, 3-2, over Penn State and California, respectively. The only two upsets of the day came when Texas A&M downed third-seed Georgia and fourth-seeded Kentucky fell to Clemson by scores of 3-2. Seventh-seeded Florida pitched the only shutout of day, blanking UCLA, 5-0. Georgia State and Texas also recorded big victories. The Panthers won 4-1 over Washington while the Longhorns defeated the Waves, 3-1-1. Arizona beat Purdue, 3-2.
Roberto Castro, Nicholas Thompson and Michael Barbosa all won their morning matches against Penn State, while Castro and Barbosa were comfortably ahead in their second round contests against Arizona in the afternoon. Chan Song and Kevin Larsen also were ahead in their matches against the Wildcats.
Play was suspended with Tech and Arizona having completed 13 holes in four matches, and 12 holes in the other.
Second round action will resume Monday morning at 8 a.m. and the third round will begin one hour after completion of round two. Georgia Tech, Texas, Texas A&M and Oklahoma State lead in the their winners’ bracket matches while Penn State, Kentucky, Georgia and UCLA are ahead in the consolation bracket.
