Golf Team Up a Spot to Ninth at Mauna Lani Invitational

Kohala Coast, Hawai’i – James White played the back nine in 3-under-par and finished with a 2-under 70 Thursday, pacing Georgia Tech to a second-round score of 3-over 291 as the Yellow Jackets moved up to ninth place after 36 holes of the Mauna Lani Invitational on the Kohala Coast of Hawaii.

White, a sophomore from Acworth, Ga., birdied for of his last 12 holes with no bogeys to lead the Yellow Jackets. John-Tyler Griffin posted a 1-under 71, and Kyle Scott an even-par 72 for Tech, which has a 36-hole total of 595, 19 shots over par and 17 strokes off the lead of Washington.

The Huskies shot a 1-under-par round of 287 and have a two-round total of 578 (2-over-par) to top the field of 22 teams. Stanford (+4) is two shots back, followed by Oregon (+5), Oklahoma State (+8), Texas and UCLA (+13), Texas Tech and Southern California (+18). Oregon State (+24) is in 10th place.

“A better day today for us,” said head coach Bruce Heppler. “James, Kyle and J.T. gave us three very good rounds. We started on the tough part of the golf course again, but we got it together after a little bit of a rough beginning. I look forward to getting out there again tomorrow and see what we can do.”

Griffin and Scott are tied for eighth place individually with a score of 1-over-par 145. Each of them played the front nine of the 6,913-yard Mauna Lani Resort course in 1-under-par, and avoided the set backs of the first nine they experienced Wednesday.

They are five shots off the pace of Kevin Tway of Oklahoma State, who posted the day’s best round of 68 and has a 36-hole total of 140 (5-under-par). Nick Taylor of Washington is a shot back at 141, followed by Stanford’s Sihwan Kim (142). Bobby Hudson of Texas and Gregor Main of UCLA are tied for fourth place at 143, and Charlie Hughes and Andrew Vijarro of Oregon are tied for sixth at 144.

The final round begins Friday with a shotgun start at 12:30 p.m. local time (5:30 p.m. Eastern).
