Golf Team Finishes Second at Golfweek Preview

Sept. 29, 2005

ATLANTA – Georgia Tech shot a six-under-par 282 Wednesday, led by a 68 from All-American Roberto Castro, and the sixth-ranked Yellow Jackets finished in second place at the Golfweek Preview Invitational in Sunriver, Ore.

Castro’s 68, four shots under par at the 7,671-yard Crosswater Golf Club, and freshman Cameron Tringale’s 69 led the Jackets’ charge Wednesday, but defending national champion Georgia shot 11-under 277 and expanded its lead to 15 shots (19-under-par 845) in the final standings.

Tech finished at four-under-par 860, two shots ahead of third-place Oklahoma State (2-under 862). UNLV finished in fourth place (867) and Duke fifth (869).

Castro, from Alpharetta, Ga., began his junior year the way he ended his sophomore campaign, placing third on an NCAA Championship course at eight-under-par 208. He finished three shots behind Brian Harman of Georgia and Pablo Martin of Oklahoma State, who tied for medalist honors.

Kevin Larsen, a junior from Santa Barbara, Calif., carded his third straight 71 Wednesday and earned his highest finish in more than a year, a tie for ninth place at three-under-par 213. Senior Mike Barbosa, from St. Petersburg, Fla., shot 76 Wednesday and did not count for the Jackets, but tied for 25th place individually at four-over-par 220. Tringale’s 69 lifted him into a tie for 28th place at five-over 221, and freshman Taylor Hall shot 74 Wednesday to post his first counting score for the Yellow Jackets. He finished in a tie for 64th.

Next up for Tech is the Jerry Pate National Collegiate, Oct. 10-11 in Birmingham, Ala.
