Freshman James White led Georgia Tech for the second straight day with a 2-under-par 70 Saturday, but the 13th-ranked Yellow Jackets fell back to fifth place in the team standings after a second-round 292 at the Puerto Rico Classic golf tournament.
No. 2-ranked Georgia shot an 18-under-par 270 as a team and surged to a seven-stroke lead over Clemson after 36 holes on the River Course at the Westin Rio Mar Resort. The Bulldogs have a 23-under-par total of 553, while the Tigers are at 16-under-par 560. NC State is third at 9-under 567, Oklahoma State is fourth at 8-under 568, and Tech is fifth at 4-under 572. Texas is the only other team under par at 2-under 574.
White, from Acworth, Ga., remained in a tie for third place at 6-under-par 138, tied with David May of Clemson (70 Saturday) and Harris English of Georgia (66). They are seven strokes behind Dylan Fritelli of Texas, who fired a 64 Saturday and has a 36-hole score of 13-under 131. Georgia’s Hudson Swafford is in second place at 7-under 137.
John-Tyler Griffin shot an even-par 72 Saturday and moved into a tie for 18th place at 1-under-par 143. Cameron Tringale, David Dragoo and Minghao Wang each posted 3-over-par 75s.
Tringale, tied for seventh after 18 holes, fell back to a tie for 25th at 1-over 145. Dragoo is tied for 31st at 146, and Wang is tied for 50th at 149.
The final round begins at 6:30 a.m. Eastern time Sunday.
