Aug. 21, 2006

ATLANTA – Georgia Tech’s Roberto Castro, Adam Cohan and Cameron Tringale, as well as Yellow Jacket alumnus Carlton Forrester will be all be in the field when the United States Amateur Championship gets underway Monday with 36 holes of stroke play in Chaska, Minn.

Each of the more than 300 players will play 18 holes on the 7,473-yard, par-72 Hazeltine National Golf Club and 18 on the 6,616-yard, par-71 Chaska Town Course over the next two days, with the top 64 finishers advancing to the match play portion of the championship beginning Wednesday. The championship match is scheduled for Sunday.

It is the second U.S. Amateur appearance each for Castro, a rising senior from Alpharetta, Ga., and Cohan, a rising sophomore from Wayne, Pa. Castro, who made the field with a fourth-place finish at a sectional qualifying event at Piedmont Driving Club in Atlanta, advanced to match play two years ago and lost to Tech teammate Nicholas Thompson in the first round. Cohan played in three events for Tech last year as a red-shirt freshman, and tied for fourth in the Pennsylvania State Amateur this summer.

Tringale, a second-team All-American and the Atlantic Coast Conference Freshman of the Year last spring, qualified by tying for third at South Hills Country Club in West Covina, Calif. The sophomore from Laguna Niguel, Calif., won two events for Tech last year, finished eighth at the NCAA Championship and was third in the California State Amateur this summer.

Forrester, an honorable mention All-American at Tech in 1999 and 2000, bypassed qualifying by virtue of his runner-up finish in last year’s U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship. The Birmingham, Ala., resident won this summer’s Northeast Amateur and tied for 10th at the Southern Amateur.
