Cink Halves, Kuchar Falls in Ryder Cup Singles

Oct. 4, 2010

Newport, Wales – Stewart Cink earned a half-point for the United States by halving his match with Rory McIlroy, and Matt Kuchar lost to Ian Poulter, 5 and 4, Monday, as the United States’ rally fell short and Europe won the Ryder Cup, 14 ½ – 13 ½, at Celtic Manor in Newport, Wales.

Europe held a 9 ½ – 6 ½ lead after the first three sessions were completed. Two weather delays forced the 12 singles matches to be played Monday for the first time in Cup history.

The U.S. got victories Monday from Steve Stricker, Dustin Johnson, Jeff Overton, Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Zach Johnson, as well as halves from Cink and Rickie Fowler for a total of seven points, but they needed 7 ½ points to retain the Cup. Hunter Mahan, playing in the last match with Graeme McDowell, lost 3 and 1.

Cink’s career record in 19 Ryder Cup matches is now 5-7-7, including a 1-0-5 mark in fourball matches. The 1995 Tech graduate is 3-4-1 in foursomes matches, 1-3-1 in singles for a total of 8 ½ points won. He was 1-0-3 in this Ryder Cup, while Kuchar was 1-1-2.

Kuchar, a Ryder Cup rookie, is the PGA’s leading money-winner in 2010 ($4,881,227).

Cink, making his fifth Ryder Cup appearance, has won more than $1.5 million in 2010. Among the 12 players on the ’10 Ryder Cup team, only Phil Mickelson (8), Jim Furyk (7) and Tiger Woods (6) have made more appearances.
