Castro, Sallinger & Trapani Named Wendy's Georgia Tech Student-Athletes of the Week

May 24, 2004

ATLANTA-Tech golf standout Roberto Castro, softball star Jessica Sallinger and baseball player Mike Trapani were named the Wendy’s Georgia Tech Student-Athletes of the Week for Monday, May 24, 2004.

Castro, a freshman from Alpharetta, Ga., was Tech’s top finisher at the NCAA East Region Championship with a ninth place finish. He is currently Tech’s top stroke average leader. The ninth place finish marked his fourth top-10 finish of the season.

Sallinger, a junior from Kennesaw, Ga., was named to the Athens Regional All-Tournament team. She led the regional with 32 strikeouts in 24 innings pitched. Sallinger recorded a shutout against No. 6 seed Massachusetts in Tech’s opening game of the regional. She set the Tech single-season record in wins (31), shutouts (14), strikeouts (344) and ERA (0.82). The junior from Kennesaw, Ga. became only the second pitcher in ACC history to surpass 1,000 strikeouts.

Trapani, a sophomore from Dunwoody, Ga., hit .600 (9-for-15) to lead Tech to four wins last week against Georgia State and Maryland and help the Jackets extend the nation’s longest winning streak to 17 games. He hit two home runs, had one double, five RBI, five runs scored and one stolen base. Trapani went 2-for-4 in Tech’s win over Georgia State on Tuesday, and went 7-for-11 with a pair of home runs in Tech’s sweep of Maryland.
