ATLANTA – Georgia Tech’s Roberto Castro shot a two-over-par 74 on the difficult Hazeltine National Golf Club on Tuesday, then survived an 11-man playoff for the last 10 spots to advance to the match play portion of the U.S. Amateur Championship that begins today.
The rising Tech senior posted a 36-hole of four-over 147 in the stroke-play portion of the event and was in an 11-way tie for 55th place. The 11 players played off for 10 spots late Tuesday and finished this morning.
Castro, from Alpharetta, Ga., will meet Mark Harrell of Hazelhurst, Ga., at 2:30 p.m. Eastern time. He is in the match-play field for the second time, having lost to former Yellow Jacket teammate Nicholas Thompson in the first round two years ago.
The second and third rounds will be played Thursday, the quarterfinals Friday, the semifinals Saturday and the 36-hole final Sunday. The Golf Channel will provide coverage from 4-6 p.m. Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. NBC will televise Saturday’s semifinals and the Sunday championship match.
