Cameron Tringale Named to U.S. Walker Cup Team

Aug. 30, 2009

ATLANTA – Georgia Tech’s Cameron Tringale and Oklahoma State’s Peter Uihlein have been selected as the final two members of the U.S. Walker Cup team, the Tech alumnus learned Sunday.

Tringale, a 2009 graduate and a first-team All-American last spring, made the round of 16 at the recently completed U.S. Amateur championship, and Uihlein advanced to the quarterfinals. Eight members of the team were announced a week ago.

“It’s a huge satisfaction,” said Tringale Sunday. “I’ve worked for this two years, designed my life around achieving this goal, and it’s pretty special. It’s definitely worth the sacrifices and hard work. I thought I had a good chance, but you never really know. I was thrilled when I got the call.”

The U.S. team will hold practice sessions this weekend at Caves Valley in Towson, Md., then move to Merion on Sunday.

A native of Laguna Niguel, Calif., is the first Tech golfer to make the team since Nicholas Thompson in 2005. He joins Thompson, Bryce Molder, Matt Kuchar, David Duval, Charlie Yates, Watts Gunn and Bobby Jones on the list of Tech standouts to play for the U.S. in the biennial matches between U.S. and European amateurs.

Tringale made All-America teams three times in his four years at Tech, and made the All-Atlantic Coast Conference team four times. He delayed beginning his professional career after the NCAA Championship last June in order to fulfill his goal of playing in the Walker Cup. He qualified for the U.S. Open and automatically qualified for the U.S. Amateur as a result.

Uihlein, who will be a junior at Oklahoma State, is the third member of last year’s Cowboys team to make the team, joining Rickie Fowler and Morgan Hoffmann.

The Walker Cup will take place Sept. 12-13 at Merion Golf Club in Ardmore, Pa. The Americans lead the series 33-7-1.
