Mike Barbosa, Whitney Haller, and Wes Hodges were named Georgia Tech Student-Athletes of the Week for Monday, April 17, 2006.
Barbosa, a senior from St. Petersburg, Fla., matched the best finish of his career with a tie for fourth at last week’s inaugural United States Collegiate Championship, posting rounds of 70-75-68 to finish with a 3-under-par tournament score of 213. His birdie putt on the 18th hole secured a tie for fourth in the team standings for the fourth-ranked Yellow Jackets, their best finish since winning the UH-Hilo Intercollegiate in early February.
Haller, a freshman from Marietta, Ga., led the Yellow Jackets to a 6-0 record last week, including a sweep over Boston College. Haller smacked two home runs against Furman in a doubleheader and added two more over the weekend against the Eagles to push her ACC leading and single-season conference record total to 21. She also became the ACC’s all-time leading RBI hitter for a single-season against the Lady Paladins, ending the weekend with a season total of 66. Haller picked up her second win of the season in the circle against the Eagles, throwing 1.1 innings, allowing just one hit in a Tech 12-11 come-from-behind victory in game one of the BC series. She finished the week 9-for-20 (.450), with one double, four home runs, 11 runs batted in, four walks and tallied a 1.100 slugging percentage while as a pitcher, she went 1-0, with a 3.71 ERA and four strikeouts in 5.2 innings pitched.
Hodges, a junior from Ooltewah, Tenn., hit .375 and with two home runs and 13 RBI to lead Tech to a 3-1 record in four games against ranked opponents, No. 5 Clemson and No. 25 Georgia. Hodges was 6-for-12 (.500) with 13 RBI and posted a 1.250 slugging percentage in Tech’s series win over Clemson. For the week, Hodges had three doubles and two home runs. He was 2-for-4 with a double, home run and six RBI on Saturday, and went 3-for-4 with two doubles, a home run and seven RBI on Sunday.
