THE FLATS – Recent graduate Bo Andrews and incoming freshman Jacob Joiner both earned berths in next month’s U.S. Amateur Championship by claiming available spots in qualifiers held Monday and Tuesday.
Their advancement gives Georgia Tech four representatives in the U.S. Amateur, which will be conducted Aug. 11-17 at the Atlanta Athletic Club in Johns Creek, Ga. Rising senior Ollie Schniederjans, the world’s top-ranked amateur player, and 2014 graduate Seth Reeves, ranked No. 26 in the world, are in the field based on their amateur ranking.
Andrews, a 2014 Tech graduate, finished third in the qualifier held at Great Waters at Reynolds Plantation in Eatonton, Ga., firing rounds of 67-71 for a 6-under-par 138, grabbing one of five spots available and earning his way into the championship for the second year in a row. The Raleigh, N.C., native earned GCAA all-region honors three times in his Tech career, won one tournament and posted 11 top-10 finishes in 46 events.
Joiner, who will enroll at Tech in the fall, was the co-medalist in the qualifier held at the Ritz-Carlton Golf Club in Orlando, Fla., posting scores of 68-71 for a 139 total, and capturing one of three spots available there. The Leesburg, Ga., native is a consensus top-50 player in his graduating class and top 100 among all junior players.
