April 18, 2005

ATLANTA – Georgia Tech standouts Kelly Anderson, Jose Luis Muguruza and Chan Song were named the Wendy’s Georgia Tech Student-Athletes of the Week for Monday, April 18, 2005.

Anderson, a junior from Pietermaritzburg, South Africa, helped Georgia Tech to the regular season ACC co-championship with two doubles and one singles win on the week. She clinched the match against UNC with a 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 victory over the Tar Heels’ Jenna Long at the No. 3 singles position, giving the Yellow Jackets their first top-3 finish in history. Anderson teamed with Whitney McCray to defeat Duke’s Saras Arasu and Parker Goyer, 8-5, Saturday before dowing the UNC duo of Caitlin Collins and Tanja Markovic, 8-1, Sunday.

Muguruza, a sophomore from Wesley Chapel, Fla., helped the Yellow Jackets to two key wins, giving them a 5-5 record in ACC play. Against NC State, he won at No. 1 singles and No. 2 doubles, helping Tech to a 4-3 win. On Sunday, he won the final match of the day at No. 1 singles to give the Jackets a 4-3 win.

Song, a senior from Orlando, Fla., recorded his best finish in the ACC Championship and the best finish of his career overall with a second-place performance at the ACC Championship last weekend. Song shot four-under-par 68 on the final day to carry the Yellow Jackets to a second-place team finish, and his 54-hole total was two-under-par 214. Continuing what has become the best year of his career, the ACC Championship also was his fifth top-10 finish in 11 events this year, and his eighth top-20 showing. He has a team-best 71.22 stroke average for the spring and has finished fourth or higher in three of six tournaments.
