THE FLATS – Georgia Tech junior forward Zaire O’Neil picked up ACC Player of the Week honors on Monday after posting two solid performances for the Jackets last week, including a career-night against Virginia Tech.
In Tech’s two games, O’Neil averaged 24.5 points, 9.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.0 steals per game. The Newark, N.J., native opened the week helping Tech erase a 22-point deficit at Virginia and force overtime, matching her then-career-high in scoring with 24 points. The Jacket also pulled down a career-high 14 rebounds against the Cavaliers for her first double-double of the season and sixth of her career.
O’Neil led Tech on Sunday in an 87-81 victory over Virginia Tech, pouring in a team-best and new personal-high 25 points on 9-of-16 shooting. Additionally, she was 7-of-10 from the free throw line, dished out three assists and recorded a steal against the Hokies.
“Zaire has been the center of our offensive system the past three years,” commented head coach MaChelle Joseph. “This recognition is well deserved!”
Georgia Tech returns to action welcoming NC State for a 7 p.m. tip on Thursday on ACC Network Extra. The game marks the annual Play4Kay Pink Game and fans are encouraged to wear pink in support of breast cancer awareness.
