The Georgia Tech women’s basketball team (1-0) will seek its second win of the young 2011-12 season when it takes on the Old Dominion Lady Monarchs (0-1) at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 13, at the Arena at Gwinnett Center.
The Yellow Jackets routed Alabama State, 97-37, in both team’s season opener on Friday, Nov. 11. Sophomore Dawnn Maye, making her first career start, and freshman Sydney Wallace both finished with team-highs of 13 points. Maye and junior Jasmine Blain, who finished with 10 points, each tallied career-highs.
Old Dominion enters Sunday’s game coming off a 77-65 loss to Virginia Tech on Friday, Nov. 11, at home. The Lady Monarchs were led by freshman Ashley Betz-White’s 22 points and senior Tia Lewis added 18.
Last season, the Lady Monarchs topped Tech in each team’s second game of the year, 65-63. The Jackets shot 50 percent from the field, but managed to convert on only 25 percent of free throws, 12-of-26.
Season Opening Success: The Yellow Jackets improved to 28-10 (.737) all-time on opening day with the win over Alabama State. Georgia Tech is 21-4 since 1978-79 when opening the season at home. In head coach MaChelle Joseph’s nine years, Tech is 9-0 in season openers and 7-0 in openers at home.
On This Date: Georgia Tech is 2-0 when playing on November 13. The two wins: 63-30 over Winthrop at home to open the 2009-10 season and 66-61 at Tulane in the second game of the 2007-08 season.
Tech Against CAA: Georgia Tech owns a 16-4 (.800) all-time record against opponents from the Colonial Athletic Association. Tech is 1-2 all-time against Old Dominion. Joseph is 9-2 as a head coach against the CAA.
Seniors Seek Wins Record: The 2011-12 Georgia Tech senior class has a chance to set the school record for wins by a single class over its four year career. Each of the last three classes to graduate from Tech has set the record, which currently stands at 91 by the 2011 class of Alex Montgomery and Deja Foster. Currently, the 2012 class has 70 wins and would need 21 to tie the mark of 91.
