THE FLATS-The Georgia Tech women’s basketball team hosts Clayton State in an exhibition contest on Sunday at 2 p.m. at McCamish Pavilion.
The contest is the first of the Yellow Jackets’ 2013-14 slate. Tickets can be purchased for $2, with all proceeds benefiting the Adopt a Family Association. The exhibition game will be free for anyone college age or younger. Live stats will be available on GameTracker.
Parking Notice
Please access parking lots via 10th Street. The 5th Street entrance to campus is closed due to Taste of Atlanta, and interior campus streets (Ferst, 4th Street, Brittain Drive, Bobby Dodd Way) may also be blocked pending conclusion of Iron Buzz race (which begins at 8a).
Scouting Clayton State
Clayton State was most recently ranked No. 2 in the country by the Women’s Division II Bulletin. In 2012-13, the Lakers finished the year, 32-1. The one loss came during the NCAA Division II Elite Eight. The Lakers closed the regular season ranked #1 in the country and finished the season ranked 5th in the nation. Clayton State captured the Peach Belt Conference regular season title with an undefeated 19-0 record.
Clayton State returns three starters from last season’s 30-1 squad. Among the returners are Peach Belt Conference Defensive Player of the Year Shacamra Jackson, PBC Freshman of the Year Kayla Price, along with guard Bena Hanyard and forward Jessica Covington.
Family Ties
Senior Dawnn Mayewill play against her cousin, Kayla Prince, this Sunday. Price is a sophomore guard and was named the Peach Belt Conference Freshman of the Year in 2013-13. She started 32 of 33 games last season.
Giving Back
The price of admission for Sunday’s game will be $2. All proceeds will benefit the Adopt a Family Association. The exhibition game will be free for anyone college age or younger.
Sunday is Kids Day!
This season, every Sunday will be Kids Day with children admitted free of charge. There will be a KidZone for them to enjoy pre-game as well. As always, Georgia Tech students are admitted free to all home games with their BuzzCard.
Tech Picked Fifth
Georgia Tech was picked to finish fifth in both the ACC media and coaches polls. In the media poll, the Yellow Jackets were predicted to finish fifth, tied with Florida State. The Yellow Jackets were also picked to finish fifth in 2011-12, the same year they advanced to the ACC Championship game and made it to the Sweet 16.
Preseason Polls
In the USA Today Preseason Poll, the Yellow Jackets checked in at number 19. Tech is one of five ACC teams in the preseason poll, joining Duke (3), Maryland (5), North Carolina (6) and Notre Dame (9).
Preseason Honor Roll
While at the 2013 Women’s Basketball ACC Media Day, both Tyaunna Marshall and Kaela Davispicked up preseason honors. Marshall was named to the Preseason All-ACC Team by both the media and coaches. Davis was honored on the Newcomers Watch List by both the media and coaches.
Preseason Favorite
Senior Tyaunna Marshallhas been featured on three preseason lists so far this offseason. Along with being named to the Preseason All-ACC Team, the Upper Marlboro, Md. native was named to the 2013 Wade Watch List as well as the 2013 Wooden Award Preseason Top-30.
The Wade Trophy is presented annually to the NCAA Division I Player of the Year by the National Association of Girls and Women in Sport (NAGWS) and the WBCA. The Woodard Award preseason list is comprised of 30 student-athletes who, based on last year’s individual performance and team records, are the early front-runners for college basketball’s most prestigious honor.
Record Book Watch
Tyaunna Marshall enters her senior season with 1,520 career points which ranks eighth on Georgia Tech’s all-time list. Kisha Ford(1994-97) holds the record with 1,955 points. Marshall is one of just five Yellow Jackets all-time with at least 1,500 career points and 600 career rebounds.
