Yellow Jackets Face Tough Test In San Juan

Nov. 24, 2011

Georgia Tech game notes

The Georgia Tech women’s basketball team (4-0) may be heading to paradise when it travels to San Juan, Puerto Rico, for the Thanksgiving weekend, but the Yellow Jackets see the trip as a business trip.

After defeating Kennesaw State in convincing fashion, 94-51, Tuesday night, the Yellow Jackets will face two very stiff challenges when they play the No. 13/13 Rutgers Scarlet Knights (4-0) and the No. RV/18 Green Bay Phoenix (3-0) Friday and Saturday, respectively, in the San Juan Shootout.

Tech will be seeking its best start in head coach MaChelle Joseph’s nine year tenure on The Flats. With a pair of wins, not only would the Jackets surely be ranked, they would post the first 6-0 start to a season since beginning the 1995-96 season 8-0.

In Tuesday’s win over the Lady Owls, junior Danielle Hamilton-Carter tallied her first career double-double with career-bests in scoring (14) and rebounds (10). Sophomore Tyaunna Marshall tied for team-high honors with 14 points and freshman Tjasa Gortnar pitched in 10 points on 4-of-7 shooting off the bench.

On This Date: Georgia Tech is 7-2 when playing on Nov. 25. The seven wins: 102-90 vs. Mount St. Mary’s (11/25/00); 98-79 vs. Mercer (11/25/96); 70-60 vs. Illinois (11/25/95); 83-61 vs. Winthrop (11/25/88); 76-61 vs. Mississippi University for Women (11/25/83); 94-67 vs. Wake Forest (11/25/79); 69-67 (OT) at Vanderbilt (11/25/78).
The two losses: 67-58 vs. Georgetown (11/25/10); 108-92 vs. Furman (11/25/89).
Tech is 6-1 when playing on Nov. 26. The six wins: 74-56 vs. Georgia State (11/26/10); 82-47 vs. Long Island (11/26/02); 85-53 vs. Elon (11/26/99); 84-80 (2OT) vs. Richmond (11/26/88); 96-73 vs. Stetson (11/26/83); 68-55 at Kennesaw State (11/26/82).
The one loss: 66-42 vs. Tennessee (11/26/10).

Tech Against The BIG EAST: Georgia Tech owns an 8-13 (.381) all-time record against opponents from the BIG EAST Conference, and is 1-0 this year with a 74-63 win at Marquette Nov. 19. The Yellow Jackets will face two BIG EAST foes in the 2011-12 regular season.
Head Coach MaChelle Joseph is 3-4 against teams from the BIG EAST.

Tech Against The Horizon League: Georgia Tech is 0-1 all-time against teams from the Horizon League. While Tech is 1-0 against Green Bay, the Phoenix were not yet a member of what would become the Horizon League when the Yellow Jackets defeated the Phoenix in 1992.

First Time Foes: Georgia Tech will face five opponents for the first time in 2011-12 (Central Arkansas, Marquette, North Carolina A&T, Rutgers and SIU-Edwardsville). So far this season, Tech is 1-0 against first time opponents having defeated Marquette Nov. 19.
Last season, Tech played nine opponents for the first time and went 7-2. The opponents: Bowling Green (W), Georgetown (L), Jacksonville State (W), Middle Tennessee State (W), Missouri (W), Ohio State (L), Portland State (W), Prairie View A&M (W) and Washington (W).

Seeking 6-0 Start: Georgia Tech will be seeking its first 6-0 start to a season since the Jackets opened the 1995-96 season 8-0. The best start to a season under head coach MaChelle Joseph is 5-0, which Tech did in 2004-05, in 2005-06 and in 2007-08.
