THE FLATS – The Georgia Tech women’s swimming and diving team opened up the 2016-17 season in dominating fashion with a 156-98 win over the Georgia Southern Eagles on Friday at the McAuley Aquatic Center.
“It was a great way to get started,” said head coach Courtney Shealy Hart. “I thought we raced really well. Obviously we swam some off events so that was fun. I’m really proud of how we are starting the season off and looking forward to getting into some ACC action next weekend.”
The home-standing Yellow Jackets jumped out to a great start posting a 1-2 finish in the 400 yard medley relay with the team of Kira de Bruyn, Kristen Hepler, Emily Ilgenfritz and Chiara Ruiu taking first-place with a time of 4:03.73, finishing ahead of the second-place team in Kelli Croft, Sara Gilbert, Chloe Miller and Maddie Oliver with their time of 4:10.90.
Sophomore Iris Wang touched the wall first in a time of 1:20.25 in the 150 yard free, placing in front of teammates Lila Best (1:24.66) and Lindsay Wallace (1:25.06) who took third and fourth, respectively.
The trio of Gilbert (26.65), Maddie Paschal (26.90) and Megan Young (27.04) went 1-2-3 in the 50 yard back to score for the Jackets, while Alex Rieger (27.66) and Caroline Lee (27.69) touched the wall in fifth and sixth before being exhibitioned.
Three Tech freshmen in Miller (1:32.06), Tamir Gonen Cohen (1:32.40) and Oliver (1:34.52) took the first three spots in the 150 yard fly to score for the Jackets, while fourth and fifth places went to seniors Samantha Kase (1:35.05) and Camille Felix (1:35.71) who were both exhibitioned.
Wang picked up her second win of the day in the 50 yard free with a time of 23.59, edging Kaitlin Kitchens and her time of 23.74 for a second-place finish. Morgan Lyons took fourth-place overall with her time of 24.69.
Tech returners Gilbert (1:32.04), Rieger (1:32.16) and Paschal (1:32.53) finished in first, second and third-place, respectively in the tight 150 yard back event, while Ruiu (1:43.46) and Hepler (1:44.06) touched the wall in first and second in the 150 yard breaststroke event.
Ilgenfritz picked up her first intercollegiate win in the 250 yard free with her time of 2:25.35. Wallace finished second with a time of 2:29.87, while Croft (2:32.56) and fellow freshman Emily Dykstra (2:32.75) placed fourth and fifth overall.
Kitchens earned her first win as a Yellow Jacket in the 50 yard fly with a time of 25.38, leading a Tech charge that saw Lyons take second at 26.08 and Miller finishing in third at 27.00.
In the 200 yard IM, the Yellow Jackets finished 1-2-3, yet were exhibitioned. Ruiu (2:07.94), Hepler (2:09.35) and de Bruyn (2:11.28) all touched the wall first in the event.
Also exhibitioned was both the ‘A’ and ‘B’ relay units in the 400 yard free relay, as the team of Wang, Lyons, Illgenfritz and Kitchens finished with a time of 3:27.95, ahead of the unit of Paschal, Wallace, Best and Rieger and their time of 3:37.59.
De Bruyn also recorded a third-place finish in the 50 yard breast event with a time of 31.66, while Lee tallied a fifth-place finish with her 33.84 in the 150 yard back and Dykstra took fifth in the 50 yard breast with a time of 33.38.
Freshman Sara al Khatib finished sixth in the 250 yard free with her time of 2:33.47 and seventh in the 150 yard free with a time of 1:28.29 in her first-ever collegiate event, while Florina Ilie touched the wall in eighth in the 50 yard free with a time of 27.19.
In the 3-meter dive, senior Andrea Demick picked up the win with a score of 288.30, a new 3-meter dive personal best mark, to place in front of freshman Carly Doi (266.03) and senior Madison Young (257.63) who finished in second and third overall.
The Georgia Tech duo flip-flopped in the 1-meter dive, as Doi recorded the first-place finish with a score of 278.85 to top Demick and her second-place score of 246.23. Young pick up her second third-place finish with a score of 236.40, while freshman Abbey Yates finished in fifth at 202.13.
Yates also took fifth-place overall in the 3-meter dive with a score of 214.58 in her Tech debut.
Both the men’s and women’s teams will be in action in one week, as the Yellow Jackets trek north to face off against Harvard in a dual meet on Friday, Oct. 7, at 3 p.m. in Cambridge, Mass. The two teams will then turn around to take on Boston College and Pittsburgh in an ACC tri-meet on Saturday, Oct. 8, at 5 p.m. in Chestnut Hill, Mass.
