Women’s Tennis Rolls to 5-2 Victory Over Oregon

THE FLATS – The 7th-ranked Georgia Tech women’s tennis team rolled to a 5-2 victory over Oregon on Sunday to improve to 3-0 on the season. The Jackets claimed the doubles point for the third straight match and pocketed five singles win in the victory.

DOUBLES ACTION: With wins at the top two spots, Tech took the doubles point and a 1-0 lead entering singles play. Wrapping up first at the top seed, the No. 5 Tech duo of Paige Hourigan/Kenya Jones down the 17th-ranked Oregon pair of Shweta Sangwan/Alyssa Tobita, 6-3. Johnnise Renaud/Ida Jarlskog clinched the doubles point for the Jackets from the two seed, defeating Rifanty Kahfiani/Julia Eshet, 6-3, after coming back from a 2-1 deficit. Nami Otsuka/Victoria Flores went unfinished at No. 3 against Daniela Nasser/Paiton Wagner. The pair led 5-2 before the Ducks pulled back to 5-4 before the point was clinched.

SINGLES ACTION: The Jackets pocketed four singles wins and clinched the match at 4-0 before Oregon was able to get on the scoreboard. Otsuka gave Tech a 2-0 lead picking up a straight set victory at the No. 5 seed over Julia Lilien, 6-4, 6-1. Taking on Oregon’s Eshet at No. 3, Jarlskog cruised to a 6-3, 6-0 triumph to push Tech in front, 3-0. No. 49 Hourigan clinched the match from the top seed, defeating Tobita, 6-3, 6-3. Rounding out Tech’s singles wins was Jones at No. 6, edging Wagner, 6-3, 6-3. Oregon closed out the match claiming singles wins at No. 2 and No. 4 for the final 5-2 tally.

QUOTABLE: “It was a hard fought match with Oregon today. We played pretty well in doubles to get the doubles point, but we need to work on some things in our singles play. We have some work to do before we leave Wednesday for ITA National Team indoors.” – Head Coach Rodney Harmon

UP NEXT: Tech heads to Madison, Wisc., for the ITA National Team Indoor Championships. Action kicks off Feb. 9 and runs through Monday, Feb. 12.
