ATLANTA – Georgia Tech senior center Sonja Mallory will play her final game at Alexander Memorial Coliseum and Agnus Berenato will coach one of the two teams of collegiate all-stars at the WBCA All-Star Challenge on Friday night. The game will be part of a doubleheader that also includes the WBCA’s High School All-America game, which will tip-off at 6 p.m.
“We are really excited for Sonja,” said Tech head coach Agnus Berenato. “This will be a great opportunity for her to play at Alexander Memorial Coliseum one last time and will be a great sendoff for her in the final game of her collegiate career.”
Mallory, who capped an outstanding career in 2003 by earning WBCA Honorable Mention All-America honors along with first-team All-ACC and ACC All-Defensive accolades was the Yellow Jackets top scorer, rebounder and shot blocker for the second-consecutive season. Her scoring average of 16.2 points was third best in the ACC, while her rebounding average (9.0) and blocked shot averages (1.84) were tops in the league. The Atlanta Tip-Off Club recently named Mallory as the Georgia Division I Player of the Year.
Berenato led Tech to the most successful season in program history, as the Jackets finished with a 20-11 overall record and tied for fourth in the ACC with an 8-8 league mark. Tech also reached the NCAA Tournament for the second time in school history and recorded a school record 10-game win streak early in the season. The Yellow Jackets reached the semifinals of the ACC Tournament with a win over Florida State, before bowing to eventual champion and Final Four participant Duke. Tech placed three players on All-ACC teams, led by Mallory, who was joined by juniors Fallon Stokes and Alex Stewart, both of who earned third-team recognition. For her efforts, the Atlanta Tip-Off Club named Berenato as the Georgia Division I Coach of the Year for the second time in her career.
