Tech Women's Basketball Hosts NC State on Sunday

Jan. 25, 2003

ATLANTA – The Georgia Tech women’s basketball team will look for its second-straight home win in Atlantic Coast Conference play when it hosts NC State (9-8, 4-2 ACC) in a game that will tip off at 2 p.m. on Sunday at Alexander Memorial Coliseum.

The Yellow Jackets (12-6, 1-5 ACC) were able to find the two things that they had been lacking recently against the Tigers, the combination of scoring and rebounding.

Tech was able to dominate the boards against Clemson, holding a 50-27 advantage on the glass in the contest. The Jackets had nearly as many defensive rebounds, 26, as the Tigers had overall, 27.

Georgia Tech also set the scoring tone in the game early one, netting 39 points in the first half, which was the most for the Jackets in the first period since the game against East Carolina on Dec. 31. Tech also got a great scoring burst in overtime, netting 18 points in the extra session, earning its first overtime win since the 2000 season. In the contest, the Jackets shot 42.7 percent from the field and an outstanding 85.0 percent at the free throw line.

The Jackets had five players score in double figures for the second time in 2002-03 in the game with Clemson. Tech was led in the game by junior guard Megan Isom and senior center Sonja Mallory, both of whom finished the game with 23 points. Isom was the catalyst of the overtime win, netting a pair of threes early in the extra frame to give Tech the advantage it needed. Her scoring was aided by six threes in the contest.

Mallory recorded her seventh double-double of the year with 14 rebounds to go along with the 23 points, including a career-high 10 offensive boards.

Megan Harpring (14), Alex Stewart (13) and Fallon Stokes (12) were the other Jackets in double figure scoring in the game.
