Tech Women's Basketbal Hosts Top-Ranked Duke on Monday

Jan. 12, 2003

ATLANTA – The Georgia Tech women’s basketball team will once again be looking for its first Atlantic Coast Conference victory of the 2002-03 season when it hosts top-ranked Duke on Monday night at Alexander Memorial Coliseum, with tip-off slated for 7 p.m.. The game will be televised on the ACC’s regional sports network, which includes Fox Sports Net South and the Sunshine Network. Beth Mowins will provide play-by-play coverage of the game, with Debbie Antonelli giving color analysis.

The Yellow Jackets (11-3, 0-2 ACC) will be looking to halt a two-game slide in the ACC when they welcome the Blue Devils (14-0, 2-0 ACC) to Atlanta. The game will mark the fifth time in school history that Tech has squared off with a team that was ranked first in the country, with the last such match-up coming during the 1991-92 season. The Jackets are 0-4 all-time in those contests.

Despite the current slump, Tech is still off to the best start in school history with its 11-3 record. While the Jackets finished non-conference play 11-1, they have opened up 0-2 in league play with losses to 11th-ranked UNC and on the road to Maryland.

Junior forward Fallon Stokes turned in one of the top performances in the ACC this year in the Jackets’ loss to UNC. The Atlanta native poured in a career-best 34 points against the Tar Heels on 13-of-24 shooting from the field. The point total is the second best by an ACC player this year, as Stokes also added eight rebounds in the contest. She followed that outing with 12 points against the Terrapins last Sunday.

Senior center Sonja Mallory bounced back from the UNC game with her fifth double-double of the season in the game against Maryland, finishing with 17 points and a career-high 19 rebounds. The Bronx, N.Y. native broke a pair of career marks in the contest, scoring the 1,000th point of her career, and grabbing her 600th rebound.

Junior guard Alex Stewart scored in double figures for the fourth-straight game in College Park, finishing with 10 points against the Terps. Stewart also netted 11 points against North Carolina, 10 against East Carolina and a career-high 17 against St. John’s. The Norcross, Ga., native has also hit her last 22-straight free throws and leads the league in free throw percentage (.915).

All Georgia Tech women’s basketball games can be heard locally on 91.1 WREK-FM and around the world on www.ramblinwreck.com. Live statistics from the game as well as game notes can also be found on the Yellow Jackets official website.
