Series Notes
* Clemson currently holds a 37-12 lead in the series with Georgia Tech but the Jackets have taken the last two meetings and have won three of the last four games.
* These two teams first met on the hardwood in Clemson, when the Tigers defeated the Jackets, 103-67, on January 31, 1980. That win by the Tigers began a streak of 12 straight wins in the series by Clemson before the Jackets earned their first win in January, 1987 on the Tigers’ home court by an 81-78 score.
* The series has been one of streaks: Clemson began by winning 12 consecutive games before the Jackets finally earned a victory. After winning two straight, Clemson rattled off 10 more consecutive victories, leading up to the 1992 meeting…again, at Clemson. The Jackets won three in a row, from February, 1992 through December of the same year before the Tigers had another five-game winning streak. In February, 1995, the Tech earned the first of three victories in the next three games but then yielded another six consecutive victories to Clemson, ending in 1999.
* Georgia Tech has won seven of its 23 home games in the series with Clemson, with the last home victory coming in January of last year. The Jackets scored 18 points in overtime and held the Tigers to just seven to earn an 89-78 win over the Tigers at Alexander Memorial Coliseum. Prior to that win, the Jackets two previous victories over Clemson, and five of its previous six, had come at AMC.
Jackets vs. Tigers: Last Time Out
Sonja Mallory led five Yellow Jackets in double-figures as she scored 18 points while pulling down 10 rebounds to lead Georgia Tech to a 78-63 victory over the Tigers at Littlejohn Coliseum. Chrissy Floyd led all scorers with 20 points for Clemson, while Lakeia Stokes and Julie Aderhold added 18 and 13 points, respectively. Fallon Stokes had 16 points for the Jackets as she pulled down seven rebounds of her own, while Mallorie Winn added 11 points and three assists in the contest. Alex Stewart and Megan Harpring added 15 points apiece for the Jackets, as Stewart pulled down eight rebounds while dishing out four assists and Harpring had six boards. The Jackets outrebounded the Tigers, 47-28, in the contest while Tech shot 43.1 percent from the field.
Tech Record Book Against Clemson
* In the most recent game between these two teams, Georgia Tech scored its most points ever in an overtime period with 18 as the Jackets downed the Tigers by an 89-78 score at Alexander Memorial Coliseum.
* This week, Clemson received votes in both the AP and Coaches’ Polls. The Tigers received 12 votes in the Coaches’ Poll, which would place them 35th, while the AP had them tabbed 36th with four votes. Of the Jackets’ 12 victories against Clemson, four have come when the Tigers were ranked. In 1992, the Jackets downed Clemson twice, once in the regular season and again in the ACC Tournament. The Jackets then doubled up on the Tigers again in 1996, winning both regular season matchups.
* Clemson’s 38 points against the Jackets in 1996 was the fifth-lowest total of allowed points in a contest for Tech, and second-lowest in conference games. The Jackets won that contest, 55-38 on January 25.
* The Jackets shot a blistering 83 percent from beyond the three-point arc against the Tigers on March 8, 1992, which was the second-highest three-point percentage in a Tech game in history. The Jackets defeated the 20th-ranked Tigers, 74-73, in that game at the ACC Tournament.
* On January 26, 2002, the Jackets set a new record for most free-throw attempts in a game, as they shot 50 from the charity stripe that night to earn the 83-78 victory over the Tigers. Tech made 36 of those free throws, which is second all-time in the record books and tops in ACC competition in Jackets’ history.
* Georgia Tech blocked 12 Clemson shots on January 18, 1989, which was the second-highest ever recorded by a team in a Jackets’ contest and most in an ACC game. In that game, Allison Echols set the record for most blocked shots by an individual in one game, with nine.
Scouting the Tigers
Clemson improved to 2-2 in the conference with a 77-64 victory over NC State on January 11. The Tigers won their conference opener on the road at Virginia but then dropped their next two, 72-47 at North Carolina and 68-61 versus Florida State at home. Leading the way for the Tigers is Lakeia Stokes, averaging 19.7 points and 8.4 rebounds per contest. She is also dishing an average of four assists per game and has stolen 36 passes on the year while blocking 17 shots. Julie Aderhold and Julie Talley aren’t far behind in the scoring category for the Tigers, as Aderhold is averaging 9.9 points per contest while Talley is adding 9.5. The Tigers have scored 100 more points than their opponents this season, averaging 72.2 points per game while holding their opponents to just 65.5. Clemson has blocked a total of 70 shots this season, but have carefully avoided having its own shots blocked, as opponents are averaging only 2.2 per game against the Tigers.
Last Time Out for the Jackets
Georgia Tech’s comeback at Maryland fell four points short Thursday evening, as the Jackets were unable to overcome a strong first half by the Terrapins. Chrissy Fisher scored 17 points off the bench to lead Maryland to a 91-87 win over the Jackets. The Terrapins used clutch free throw shooting, converting on 9-of-12 from the charity stripe over the final minute to hold of the Yellow Jackets, who attempted a comeback by scoring 15 points, including 10 by sophomore Mallorie Winn, during that time. Georgia Tech shot 90 percent from the free throw line, its best percentage since the Jackets played Wagner in 2000, including converting on 20-of-21 in the second half. For the game, the Terps shot 49.2 percent while the Jackets hit 46.7 percent of their shots. Stokes led all scorers in the contest with 18 points as five Yellow Jackets and five Terrapins scored in double figures. Freshman Kentrina Wilson, in her first start of the season for Tech, scored 11 points while pulling down five rebounds and blocking two shots. Winn scored 15, including a 10-for-10 performance from the free throw line, while Megan Harpring and April Johnson had 14 and 10, respectively, for the Jackets.
