ATLANTA – The Georgia Tech women’s basketball team (22-9) earned a bid to the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament Monday, drawing a No. 10 seed in the Greensboro Regional and a first-round match-up Saturday, March 22 against seventh-seeded Iowa State at the Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines, Iowa. Tip-off is slated for 12 p.m. ET and will be televised on ESPN2.
“I am really excited for these kids,” head coach MaChelle Joseph said. “They have worked extremely hard to put Georgia Tech in a position to make history in our first ever back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances. The fact that we have eight returning letterwinners with NCAA Tournament experience is a first for this program. Last year when we went to the tournament we did not know what to expect of the “Big Dance” but now we know what is ahead of us.”
The Yellow Jackets are in the NCAA Tournament in consecutive seasons for the first time in school history and just the fourth time overall. The winner of the Tech-Iowa State game will meet the winner of No. 2 Rutgers and No. 15 Robert Morris on Monday, March 24, and the survivor of that game advances to Greensboro.
Tech enters the NCAA Tournament with 22 wins, a school-best since joining the Atlantic Coast Conference before the 1979-80 season. The Jackets are coming off a hard fought, 52-43, loss to fourth-seeded Virginia in the quarterfinals of the ACC Tournament.
This will mark the first time the Jackets and Cyclones will meet on the hardwood. Tech will make its second trip to Iowa this season, having faced the University of Iowa in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge on Nov. 28.
Iowa State put together a 20-12 record in a season that saw two starters sidelined by ACL injuries. However, the Cyclones refused to make excuses, instead rallying together and completing its ninth 20-win season in school history, and knocking off three teams ranked in the top 25.
The Jackets finished the season 3-6 against teams headed to the NCAA Tournament.
