Series Notes

* Following a win in its conference opener, Georgia Tech leads the series with the Seminoles, 15-14. It is one of two series in the ACC that the Yellow Jackets lead, with the other being Wake Forest. The Jackets are equally effective at home and on the road in the series, as they own seven wins in both Alexander Memorial Coliseum and the Leon County Civic Center.

* These two teams first met during the 1974-75 season, with FSU earning the victory, 58-22.

* The Jackets are now 3-1 against Florida State over the last four games, encompassing this season and last. FSU and Tech met three times a year ago.

* Georgia Tech’s 30-point home victory against the Seminoles last season marked the third-largest margin of victory in ACC contests of the Jackets in their history, with the largest being 32 points against FSU in 1996

* Tech has swept the yearly series three times, during the 93-94, 96-97, and 98-99 seasons.

* The Jackets’ last victory in Tallahassee was in 2002 by a 73-56 final score.

Jackets vs. Seminoles: Last Time Out

The Yellow Jackets ended a nine-year drought in conference openers when they defeated Florida State, 66-59, to open ACC play on January 2nd. Tech received timely three-point shooting from Megan Isom late in the second half and then converted on six of seven from the charity stripe in the last minute of the contest to hold on for the win. The Jackets were paced by Fallon Stokes with 18 points, while Kasha Terry came out strong with the first double-double of her career, with 10 points and 11 rebounds, while blocking a then-career-high six Seminole shots. Isom was the only other Yellow Jacket to score in double figures, as she recorded 13 while senior point guard Alex Stewart had a season-high 10 assists in the game. Georgia Tech went into the contest with a 5-20 record in conference openers, with its last win coming during the 1994-95 season to Maryland.

Looking at the Seminoles

LaTonya Blue hit a game-winning shot with 0.2 seconds remaining to give Virginia an 82-80 overtime victory over Florida State Friday evening. The Seminoles led by as much as 22 points in the first half and went into the lockerroom at the end of the frame with a 32-20 lead over the Cavaliers. Virginia outscored FSU 50-38 in the second half to push the game into overtime, where the Cavs won the game with a 12-10 edge. Shante Williams led four Seminoles in double figures with 19 points, as Tasheika Allen had 15, Lauren Bradley, 12, and Trinetta Moore added 10. Bradley led FSU on the boards with nine rebounds while Alicia Gladden pulled down eight. The Seminoles shot 50 percent from the field and led the Cavs in rebounding, 40-33, but turned the ball over four more times than UVa while allowing eight steals to the Cavaliers. Virginia made seven three pointers, compared to FSU’s 1-of-9 performance from beyond the arc. Both teams recorded 17 free throws, but UVa shot 94.4 percent from the charity stripe, compared to FSU’s 68 percent. This season, the Seminoles have been led in scoring by Tasheika Allen, who is averaging 14.6 points per game, and Shante Williams, adding 10.2 per contest. Genesis Choice is leading the team with 5.9 rebounds per game while Moore is pulling down 5.2 per contest. Bradley has blocked a team-high 13 shots on the season, while Williams leads the Seminoles with 87 assists and 41 steals through 18 games. Florida State has outscored its opponents by an average of 4.7 points per game, and is shooting 45.6 percent from the field, including 31 percent from the three-point arc.

Last Time Out for the Jackets

Tar Heel freshman point guard Ivory Latta hit four threes in the second half to help North Carolina to a 63-56 victory over the Yellow Jackets in Chapel Hill Thursday evening. The loss was the fifth straight for the Jackets, who have played four of the last five games on the road. Tech and UNC went into the lockerroom tied 25-25 at the half, but then the Tar Heels went on a 6-1 run to begin the second half, pulling ahead 31-26. The Tar Heels would go up by as much as 10 points in the frame before the Jackets pulled within one point with 5:09 remaining on the clock on a jumper by Tech’s April Johnson. After a three by Latta, senior Megan Isom nailed one from beyond the arc to against pull within one at 2:19. Tech then needed to foul with less than a minute remaining to have the ability to shoot the three, but UNC connected on all four free throws with less than 20 seconds remaining while the Jackets missed a pair of threes that would have tied the game. Georgia Tech fell to 1-5 in the league and 10-8 overall following the loss and look to turn things around at Florida State.
