Tech Faces North Carolina Thursday

The Yellow Jackets will hit the road again to take on North Carolina at Carmichael Auditorium Thursday evening in a game that will tip at 7 p.m. The game will be broadcast via radio live on WREK-Radio 91.1 FM in Atlanta and online at www.wrek.org. Series Notes

* North Carolina leads the series with the Jackets, 40-11 and owns an 18-5 record at home against Georgia Tech. The Yellow Jackets and Tar Heels first met on January 9, 1980, with UNC taking home the victory, 93-61. * Georgia Tech’s last win against UNC came in Chapel Hill by an 81-62 score on January 17, 1982. The Jackets have taken two of the last three contests on the Tar Heels’ home court.

* North Carolina began the series with Tech by winning the first 17 meetings before the Yellow Jackets defeated the Tar Heels by two in February, 1988, 76-74 at Alexander Memorial Coliseum. The Jackets then took the next three games before an 81-77 win by UNC in 1990 broke the four game winning streak. From 1988 through February, 1991, Tech won seven of nine contests with the Tar Heels.

* The Tar Heels have won the last three meetings by scores of 71-62 at AMC in 2002, 72-67 in Atlanta in 2003, and 76-64 on the Tar Heels home court in 2003.

* Georgia Tech’s highest point total against the ‘Heels came in 1991, when the Jackets scored 101 in a 15-point victory at home. The lowest point total came just six years ago when UNC defeated Tech 69-48 at Alexander Memorial Coliseum.

* The Tar Heels’ highest point total versus the Jackets came in 1983, when they defeated Tech, 99-58, in Atlanta. Georgia Tech defeated the Tar Heels in 2000 by a score of 55-44, for UNC’s lowest point total in the series.

Jackets vs. Tar Heels: Last Time Out

Despite a career- and game-high 21 points from then-freshman guard Mallorie Winn, the Jackets could not stop the starting five for UNC, who combined to score 58 of UNC’s 76 points in the game as four of the five recorded double-figures in points. Coretta Brown led the ‘Heels with 17 points while Nikita Bell and Candace Sutton recorded 12 and 11, respectively. La’Tangela Atkinson recorded a double-double against the Jackets, scoring 10 points while pulling down 12 rebounds in the game. For the Jackets, Fallon Stokes had 13 points while point guard Alex Stewart added 11. UNC outrebounded the Jackets, 42-33 and had four more steals in the game. They also shot 45 percent fromt he field and held the Jackets to just 18 percent from beyond the three-point arc.

Tech Record Book Against North Carolina

* Fallon Stokes and Mallorie Winn have both set career highs in scoring against the Tar Heels, with Winn’s 21 points coming in the last meeting between the two teams in 2003 and Stokes’ 34 points coming in the first game of the series last season.

* The Yellow Jackets have defeated ranked Tar Heels teams four times in history, with the most recent victory coming on January 17, 2002. The Jackets are 4-19 all-time against ranked UNC teams, winning three of those games at Alexander Memorial Coliseum and the most recent one on the Tar Heels’ home court.

* On February 13, 1988, Ida Neal banked in a 35-foot buzzer beater giving the Yellow Jackets their first victory over UNC, 76-74, in a game that also gave then-head coach Bernadette McGlade her first victory over her alma mater.

* With the Jackets’ 91-84 win over the sixth-ranked Tar Heels in 1999, it marked the third consecutive year that Tech had defeated an opponent ranked in the top 10.

* During the 1999-2000 season, the Yellow Jackets defeated three ranked opponents, beginning with the 12th-ranked Tar Heels to advance to the quarterfinals of the NWIT.

* Georgia Tech’s 81-62 victory over North Carolina in January, 2002, marked the 350th win in school history.

* The Jackets’ 64 points in the second half against UNC in 1991 is tied for third all-time for most points in a half and is the most points ever scored against an ACC opponent in a single frame.

* Georgia Tech’s 33 free throws against the Tar Heels in 1989 marked the most shots ever made from the charity stripe for the Jackets in a single game.

* The Jackets have had four different players score 30 or more points against the Tar Heels, as LeeAnn Woodhull had 32 in 1983, Dolores Bootz scored 32 in 1988, Ida Neal recorded 30 in 1989, and Fallon Stokes had a career-high of 34 against UNC in 2003.

* Danielle Donehew set a Tech single-game record with seven free throws agains the Tar Heels in 1999 and then broke that record against UNC the following year, with eight.

Looking at the Tar Heels

North Carolina defeated Maryland on the Terps’ home court by a score of 72-59 Monday evening and were led by Camille Little, with 14 points and 15 rebounds, as five Tar Heels recorded double figures in the scoring category. UNC was able to stop the hot freshman duo of Shay Doron and Kalika France, limiting them just 17 combined points on just six-of-19 from the field. The Tar Heels outrebounded the Terps, 45-32 and shot 41 percent from the field, as compared to Maryland’s 37 percent. Leading the way for UNC this season is a pair of freshmen in Camille Little and Ivory Latta. Little leads the team in both points per game (14.6) and rebounding (8.5 rpg) while Latta stands second with 13.6 points per contest while dishing out 71 assists through 16 games. La’Tangela Atkinson and Nikita Bell are also averaging double figures in the scoring column, as Atkinson is averaging 10.6 points while Bell has 10.1 points per game. Candace Sutton is fifth on the team with 9.8 points per game, but is second in the league in blocked shots, as she has 33 on the season. The Tar Heels are shooting almost 45 percent from the field, including 32 percent from beyond the three-point arc, and have held their opponents to just 33 percent from the floor. North Carolina is also outscoring its opponents by an average of 22.6 points per game.

Last Time Out for the Jackets

The Jackets returned home for just their second ACC game at Alexander Memorial Coliseum and fell behind early to Clemson, trailing by 20 going into the lockerroom at the half. Kentrina Wilson had another strong game for Tech, leading the Jackets with 13 points in just her second career start while pulling down nine rebounds and blocking a shot. Senior Fallon Stokes recorded her fourth double-double of the year and seventh of her career with 11 points and 10 rebounds while dishing out two assists and swiping a Clemson pass. The Jackets turned the ball over 22 times, including 15 in the first half and the Tigers made the Jackets pay for those mistakes, scoring 32 points off turnovers as compared to Georgia Tech’s eight. Clemson also received help from its bench, as 22 of the Tigers’ 75 total points came from the Tigers’ non-starters. The Tigers had eight three-pointers in the game, including four by Julie Talley and three from Lakeia Stokes as compared to the Jackets’ four. Lakeia Stokes led all scorers with 23 points in the contest and also pulled down 10 rebounds while dishing out five assists and stealing four passes for the Tigers.
